Building the Internet of Things, one billion things at a time

“The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it […]” Mark Weiser, “The Computer for the Twenty-First Century,” 1991.

A few years ago, Weiser’s vision may have seemed far fetched, however the Internet of Things (aka IoT) seems to be on a fast track to make this vision a reality: connecting the fabric of our physical world, weaving it into the digital world. Depending on who you believe, the IoT should connected close from 25 to 50 billion devices by 2020.

In this talk we’ll explore the trend and think about the challenges to implementing the IoT: from usability to scale, security and privacy. Expect the path to be at times bumpy, thrilling or dangerous but most importantly the IoT is going to change our world and our society in the most fundamental way so let’s make sure we shape it before it shapes us!
